Kentucky GOP Senator Mitch McConnell has revealed in a statement that he was hospitalized after “falling at home and sustaining minor injuries.” This comes after weeks of silence regarding his health fueled speculation ahead of his planned retirement from politics.
In the statement released on Sunday, McConnell (R-Ky.) also said that he had suffered from a mild case of pneumonia and has completed a series of tests as doctors search to determine the cause of his fall.
McConnell shared his reluctance to be transparent on his health issues, citing his growing age and the intensity of the public eye that comes with his position as senator.
“You all know how folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older,” he said on his weeks-long silence. “Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct – I can’t help it.”
The GOP senator asserted that while he has been receiving “excellent care” he will not be returning to the Senate “quite yet,” though he continues to work closely on current issues of the state.
“As much as it frustrates me, this process takes time. And on the advice of my doctors, I won’t be able to return to the Senate floor to vote quite yet. But rest assured that, in the meantime, I’m not taking a break from the Senate business that matters to you,” he continued in the statement. “I’ve been working closely with my legislative staff on current issues, and with my Kentucky team who help me provide timely constituent services across our Commonwealth. I’ve also been keeping in touch with my Senate colleagues on the appropriations process, midterm politics, and everything in between.”
Along with the written announcement posted to his office website, a photo was included of the senator sitting up in bed and smiling next to his wife, Elaine Chao. He reiterated his plan to retire in January and maintained that, until then he remains committed to his work in the Senate.
“You’re right to expect your representatives to work hard for you. And part of my decision to retire at the end of my term this coming January was being honest about the demands of Senate work. But I still have unfinished business to complete on your behalf, and I have every intention of finishing the job you elected me to do.”
“I’ll keep working hard to get back on the Senate floor as soon as possible,” McConnell pledged. “And I’ll keep you posted on the progress of my recovery. Until then, I’m so grateful for your prayers and well wishes.”
McConnell was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and served as Republican leader from 2007 until last year, holding both majority and minority leadership roles during that time, according to the Associated Press. The GOP senator has suffered several health challenges in recent years and was admitted to the hospital most recently on June 14th.
