‘Unchained’ presents a grim portrait of a budding psychopath

Keisuke Yoshida’s films often portray lost souls who have gone over to the dark side, such as the cold-eyed serial killer in “Himeanole” (2016) and the father crazed by the death of his teenage daughter in “Intolerance” (2021).
In his incisive and disturbing social drama “Unchained,” Yoshida gives us a teenage boy, Kaito (Hayato Kohsaka), who harms others, sometimes brutally, without remorse.
Scripted by Yoshida and based on his own youthful experiences with similar types, the film questions whether Kaito can be rehabilitated and whether, given the suffering he causes, the effort is worth it.
