First Lady Melania Trump has announced her addition of a beehive to the White House South grounds, expanding White House honey program.
The White House revealed that the newly installed and fully functioning beehive, which was funded through the Trust for the National Mall, will provide support for the White House’s two existing colonies. Together, they will produce signature honey and help pollinate the White House Kitchen Garden, Flower Cutting Garden, and surrounding vegetation on the National Mall.
These existing hives swell to 70,000 bees during the peak summer months and produce 200 to 225 pounds of honey per year, according to the White House. The statement from the office of the first lady also noted that the new hives are expected to increase annual honey production by roughly 30 pounds.
The new beehive was hand-crafted by a local artisan and was made to resemble the White House.
Since its founding in 2009, White House carpenter Charlie Brandt started keeping bees as a hobby on the grounds. The program has since helped pollinate the nearby produce garden, which was established by former First Lady Michelle Obama that same year.
The White House honey, known for its light clover and basswood flavor with a subtle hint of citrus, is used by executive residence chefs to sweeten teas, prepare salad dressings, and craft meals and desserts. The White House also uses the honey for official gifts from the president and first lady, as well as donations to food kitchens.
