A head-on collision between two buses outside the Pentagon early Friday morning left 23 passengers injured, including 10 Department of War personnel.
Footage of the incident shows the vehicles attempting to decelerate before colliding as they navigated a bend during the morning rush hour.
First responders from Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax County arrived quickly at the scene, transporting 18 individuals to nearby hospitals while treating five others on-site.
“At approximately 7:20 a.m. today, an Omni Ride and a Fairfax Connector transit bus collided on the Metro Access Road. Twenty-three passengers were injured. Ten of the twenty-three injured passengers are Department of War personnel,” a statement read.
The collision occurred around 7:30 a.m. local time in the Pentagon Metro Station’s south parking lot, involving an OmniRide bus and a Fairfax Connector transit bus.
Although sources describe the incident as a “low-speed crash,” it caused significant disruptions; all bus traffic was subsequently diverted to the Pentagon City station, and commuters were advised to seek alternative travel arrangements.
“The Pentagon Force Protection Agency requests that the public avoid the area while first responders treat the injured and officials conduct the investigation,” officials wrote.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) activated an alternate transportation plan for commuters affected by the closure.
The Metro Access Road had remained closed as investigators work to determine the cause of the crash, however Pentagon officials later announced that operations had returned to normal by 11 a.m.
