Knicks could target former Rookie of the Year winner in free agency

The New York Knicks are in the market to upgrade their depth during free agency this year. After struggling to get the most out of their bench this past season, the team could use its $5.7 million taxpayer exception to acquire bolster their bench.
Malcolm Brogdon has recently come up as a potential candidate for the Knicks. SNY’s David Vertsberger writes that Brogdon is a realistic target for New York as they gear up to shoot for a championship next season.
“Brogdon toiled away through multiple injuries in Washington last year and is due for a bounce-back year with a higher-purpose team,” Vertsberger said. “He’s a career 39 percent shooter from deep and still only 32 years old, just two seasons removed from winning Sixth Man of the Year.”
“Injuries have been his biggest hurdle, but if he can stay healthy in a limited role, he’d be a big boost at this contract level,” he added.
As Vertsberger mentioned, Brogdon has struggled with staying healthy in his career, only appearing in 64 games or more just three times in his nine-year career. However, when he is healthy, Brogdon has been productive, winning Rookie of the Year in 2017 with the Milwaukee Bucks, and Sixth Man of the Year in 2023 with the Boston Celtics.
In just 24 games (13 starts) with the Washington Wizards last year, Brogdon averaged 12.7 points and 4.1 assists. If the Knicks were to acquire him, and he’s able to stay healthy, he could help bolster a bench unit that struggled mightily with quality production last season.
