Chychrun leads the team's defensemen in goals (18) and has posted a career-high in points (43) so far this year (65 games). His 18 tallies are the most scored by a defenseman in their first year with Washington.

He trails just Colorado Avalanche star Cale Makar (26) and the Columbus Blue Jackets' Zach Werenski (20) in turning on the red light this season amongst those at his position across the league.

"His work ethic, skill set, and ability to excel in all situations at both ends of the ice make him a valuable asset to our team. He is a perfect fit with our culture and vision for the future, and we couldn't be more thrilled that he will continue to be part of our organization for the next eight years."

Washington has become a totally different team from its 2023-24 self, going from being the final team into the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year to the first team to clinch a spot this season.

Chychrun's production has been a huge part of that equation. The Capitals boast a 17-0-1 record when he has scored this year.

With just four more points, Chychrun will break the franchise record for most points scored by a defenseman in their first season with Washington. One more goal and he'll set a career high.

Chychrun was drafted 16th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in 2016 before being traded to Ottawa.

With his new contract running through the 2033-34 NHL season, when he would be 35 years old, it seems plausible Chychrun could close out his professional career with Washington.
