Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport introduces India’s first sensory room for neurodivergent passengers

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has become the first airport in India to introduce a sensory room for neurodivergent passengers and those with sensory sensitivities. A neurodivergent person is someone whose brain processes information in a way that differs from the typical.
The facility, located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, aims to provide a calming space for those who may find airports overwhelming due to bright lights, continuous announcements, and crowded environments, according to a release from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL).
Designed to support those with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), sensory processing disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the sensory room offers a controlled environment to help passengers regulate stress before their journey, it said.
Research in sensory regulation and occupational therapy suggests that spending 15–30 minutes in a sensory-friendly space can significantly reduce feelings of being overwhelmed and improve overall travel experiences, it added.
Developed in collaboration with Incluzza, an organisation specialising in disability inclusion, the sensory room incorporates elements such as ambient lighting, interactive wall and floor projections, a ball pool, and a sensory toy station. Additional features, as per the release, include a bubble tube, galaxy projector, LED cubes, weighted blankets, crash pads, and therapy mats designed to support emotional regulation and relaxation. The room also features auditory elements like a white noise machine, tactile panels, an infinity mirror, and an aroma diffuser, catering to varying sensory needs, it said.
The release said the initiative also aligns with the airport’s broader efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusivity. In 2023, the Disability Inclusion Office by Incluzza, powered by EnAble India, was established at the airport.
KIA managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Hari Marar stated that the airport is committed to building a passenger-friendly environment and ensuring inclusivity remains a core value. “We are committed to building an inclusive and passenger-friendly airport. BLR Airport has consistently aimed to offer the latest innovations, from our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to digital solutions that enhance efficiency. The addition of the sensory room aligns with our mission to create a seamless and stress-free experience for every traveller, ensuring that inclusivity is not just a feature but a core value for us.”

Dipesh Sutariya, chairman and managing director of EnAble India, said, “We at Incluzza are proud to have partnered with BIAL in designing and building this sensory room. The Disability Inclusion Office by Incluzza, powered by EnAble India, located at BIAL, was established in 2023 in partnership with BIAL and is indicative of their deep commitment to inclusion. The Sensory Room is one of several inclusion initiatives BIAL has undertaken to ensure every kind of passenger has a good experience. It’s heartening to see accessibility being driven by thoughtful, proactive action. We hope this is the beginning of more such initiatives across the country.”
