This Holi, herbal gulal, sweets will be offered by Chandigarh’s Burail Jail inmates too

This Holi, residents of Chandigarh can add a touch of tradition and social responsibility to their celebrations by choosing eco-friendly herbal gulal and delicious sweets prepared by inmates of Model Jail, Burail.
Jail authorities have introduced herbal gulal at an affordable price — Rs 40 for a 200-gram pack and Rs 20 for a 100-gram pack — along with a range of festive sweets and snacks, ensuring a safe and joyous festival.
Raj Kumar Singh, IG Prisons, Model Jail, Burail, highlighted that the herbal gulal is made by inmates using natural and skin-friendly ingredients, making it a safer alternative to chemical-laden colours.
“The gulal is available in multiple vibrant shades and is handcrafted by inmates as part of their skill development programme,” he said.
The gulal is sold at the jail’s retail store, Srijan, located in Sector 22. Additionally, bulk orders are catered to as per demand, with manufacturing scaled up accordingly, IG Prisons added.
Beyond colors, the inmates also prepare a delectable assortment of traditional sweets such as laddoos, petha, besan burfi, and a variety of savory snacks, including samosas, namkeen, mattar, and sandwiches. Roasted items like channa, peanuts, and soya beans are also packed hygienically by inmates, ensuring quality and freshness.
“These products have gained popularity for their authentic taste and high standards of hygiene. Choosing them for Holi celebrations not only ensures quality but also supports the rehabilitation of inmates by providing them with meaningful vocational training,” said Singh.
