Dhanteras (Dhan Trayodashi) Puja Vidhi

Diwali is a five-day-long festival celebrated by Hindus, mainly in India and in all the countries where the Hindu community has settled. Every year Diwali is celebrated on Amavasya Tithi of Kartik Krishna Paksha and this year it falls on 4th November 2021 (Thursday)

Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi: first day of Diwali 

Dhanteras made up of the words wealth (Dhan) and the thirteenth day (Trayodashi) of the Krishna paksha (waning phase of moon), marks the beginning of the five days long Diwali festival. The Pradosh Kaal or the next two hours following the sunset is the most auspicious time for performing Dhanteras Puja; this year on 2^nd November 2021 the best time for Dhanteras puja is 06.17 pm to 08.11 pm.

Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the sea during ‘Samundra Manthan’ (churning of the ocean by the gods and demons ) on dhantrayodashi, so it is believed Lakshmi puja performed on Dhanteras invites auspiciousness, prosperity, wealth, and overall wellbeing into our house.

Yama (the god of death) Deep is also lit today in the South West direction of the house to ward off evil and bring longevity and wellness inside the family. This day also respects the purity & honor of Savitri for saving her husband’s life from Yama Devta.

People buy precious metals like gold, silver, brass, and copper utensils on the dhantrayodashi, and they refrain from purchasing Iron, harp objects, or black color things on Dhanteras. As people can’t buy iron things, people only take delivery of their vehicles on Dhanteras; and purchase them on an earlier date.

1. Install the idols of Lakshmi, Kuber, and Ganesh on a pedestal covered with red cloth.
2. Install a Kalash or holy pot. The important offerings kept in the puja include gold and silver coins, badasha, peda, sweets, special dishes made at home, betel leaves and nuts, fruits, and coconut.
3. Perform holy baths for the idols, chant the mantras, make the offerings and conclude the puja with aarti.
4. Gift sweets and money to employees, visitors, and needy people.
