LIVE: Southampton vs Manchester United
United have struggled to get going since conceding and Southampton look pretty comfortable at the moment. The visitors have looked threatening at set pieces, so that is perhaps the way to try and get an equaliser.
Southampton lead 1-0 at the break, thanks to a deflected strike by Adams on the half an hour mark, which has now gone down as a Fred own goal. Both teams started well, with Ward-Prowse going close for the Saints, before Pogba and Martial almost opened the scoring for the visitors. It looked like United would go on and score, but they were caught out at the back and Fred’s own goal sees them go into the break a goal down.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-0 MAN UNITED
45' There will be a minimum of two minutes added time played at the end of the second half.
44' Good save! Matic rises highest as a corner is whipped into the box by Shaw, but McCarthy reads it well and makes a good stop and holds onto the ball, with Pogba lurking nearby.
44' Into the wall! Fernandes steps up to take a free-kick around 25 yards out and in a good shooting position, but he doesn't get enough on it and the wall does its job well.
43' There isn’t long left to play before the end of the first half, can United find an equaliser before the half-time whistle?
41' Great run! Livramento sprints down the right wing from the edge of his own box and gets all the way into the United final third, skipping past a few defenders, before whipping a low cross into the box. However, Armstrong can't quite get on the end of it.
39' Greenwood manages to find a little bit of space deep in the penalty area after a cross from the right wing, but he can't make any decent contact on the ball and it flies well wide.
37' Prior to this game Adams has been directly involved in four goals in his last four Premier League games for Southampton (two goals, two assists), as many direct goal involvements as he recorded in his previous 21 appearances.
35' The noise has certainly picked up inside St Mary's now, with the Southampton fans getting behind their team and you can see that the home side look a lot more confident. United haven't got going again since conceding.
33' United have had the better chances in this first half, but couldn't convert and now Southampton have been able to punish them at the other end.
31' Fernandes has been booked for dissent after complaining to the referee, after he felt that Stephens fouled him in the build-up to the Saints goal.
30' GOAL! Southampton take the lead, it’s 1-0! Adams fires the hosts into the lead after 30 minutes! Stephens wins the ball back from Fernandes and immediately steps up the attack, with Armstrong, Adams and Djenepo linking up well on the edge of the box. Adams then fires a low strike towards goal and it takes a big deflection off Fred, which fools De Gea and flies into the bottom right corner of the net. Although it may go down as an own goal, as Adams initial shot appeared to be heading off target.
28' Decent effort! Armstrong picks up the ball on the edge of the penalty area and opts to fire a shot at goal, but he gets too much on it and his effort flies over the bar.
27' Another free-kick for Saints in a decent position, but this time Ward-Prowse opts to whip the ball into the box for a team-mate, but United manage to clear the danger.
25' The game is a bit scrappy at the moment, with Southampton starting to push a bit higher up the pitch once again, putting United under pressure at the back.
23' Stoppage in play here which the Southampton players are furious about. Greenwood has gone down holding his face, but there is hardly any contact and he appears to be fine. Stephens is especially angry and is getting a talking to from the referee.
21' United are unbeaten in their last 26 away Premier League matches (W17 D9) and a win or draw here would see the Red Devils equal the longest away unbeaten in English top-flight history, set by Arsenal in a 27-game run between April 2003 and September 2004.
19' Southampton can't get out of their own half at the moment, they have everyone back behind the ball and don't look very comfortable when United have possession in the final third.
17' Adams and Armstrong are having to drop deep in order to try and get on the ball and influence the game, linking up midfield and attack. They haven't seen much of the ball so far.
15' It now only seems to be a matter of time before United get the opening goal, most likely from a set piece as they look very dangerous. Southampton need to make some changes at the back on these.
13' Good opportunity! Southampton are really struggling at set pieces so far and United test them once again. Shaw whips another good free-kick into the box and rises Pogba above his marker and powers a header towards goal, but he gets too much on it and it flies over the crossbar.
12' Excellent delivery into the penalty area by Shaw and Pogba meets it at the far post, but his low shot is well blocked by Salisu. Good defending.
11' Southampton won four of their last six Premier League matches against Man Utd at the Dell (L2) but have beaten them just once in 13 league meetings at St Mary’s (D4 L8), a 1-0 win in August 2003 with James Beattie scoring the winner. They are winless in 10 home league games against the Red Devils (D4 L6), despite taking the lead in six of those games.
9' Both teams have now had a good goal scoring chance in the opening few minutes of the game, so we will hopefully see a few goals today.
7' UNITED CHANCES! So close for United! Fernandes whipped a free-kick in from the right wing, which is met by Pogba at the far post, but he doesn't get the best of contact on it and the ball strikes the crossbar. The rebound then falls to Martial just a couple of yards out, but he doesn't get the best of strikes away and Salisu manages to clear it off the line.
5' United have been unable to get the ball down and keep possession in the opening stages, with Southampton starting the game really well.
3' Bright start here by Southampton, they aren't allowing United any time on the ball to settle and play it out from the back. They've won a couple of corners now, can they create anything?
1' SAVE! Ward-Prowse tests De Gea in the opening minute of the game! The Saints skipper steps up to take a free-kick around 35 yards out and he tries to catch the United keeper out at his near post and it almost sneaks into the bottom left corner of the net. However, De Gea made a good save to deny him.
1' We're under way!
The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!
