Japanese nail salons are tourists’ new obsession

If you’re an A-list celebrity wanting an eye-popping look for your nails, odds are getting better every day that your nail artist will be Japanese.
Based in New York, Mei Kawajiri does the nails of stars like Dua Lipa, Addison Rae, Jennie of K-pop fame and Spanish singer Rosalia. From Los Angeles, self-styled Britney Tokyo works with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Hailey Bieber and Doechii, just as fellow LA transplant Miho Okawara fixes up the cuticles of Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga and Beyonce herself.
Many of these U.S.-based Japanese artists catering to the global glitterati have lengthy waitlists and inaccessible price points, typically from around $300 (around ¥47,000) for basic designs. But for an increasing number of people around the world enamored with Japan’s loud and proud take on nail design, there’s a paradoxically cheaper way to get your nails done up the Japanese way — hop on a plane and get them done in Japan.
