U.K.’s Starmer clings on as rivals try to build coup momentum
U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer survived in post on Tuesday despite a slew of ministerial resignations which have so far failed to force his downfall.
Some 90 Labour Party members of Parliament, including four junior ministers who quit their posts, called for the premier to stand down, saying they believed the governing party needs new leadership in order to turn around its fortunes after a disastrous set of local election results last week.
Several allies of Health Secretary Wes Streeting, one of Starmer’s potential successors, were among those to say he should go, leading lawmakers to conclude that Streeting is attempting to build pressure against the premier ahead of announcing a challenge. The secretary declined to take questions from reporters as he left a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning, but a person familiar with the matter later said he would hold talks with the prime minister on Wednesday.
