During the annual First Lady’s Luncheon, First Lady Melania Trump was joined by Second Lady Usha Vance to reflect on the significant milestones achieved by the Trump administration during the President’s second term.
Taking the podium on Thursday, Mrs. Trump reaffirmed her dedicated focus on the welfare of children, specifically championing the needs of those within the foster care system and those displaced by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
She further emphasized the importance of supporting American youth as they navigate the complexities of rapidly evolving technology while preparing to enter the modern workforce.
“As parents and leaders, it is our ethical obligation to ensure our kids develop emotionally and physically within a safe environment,” she asserted, reiterating a message she shared with the House Ways and Means Committee last week.
Her address to the committee on Capitol Hill followed the signing of the “Fostering the Future for American Children and Families” executive order (EO), which the president signed in November. At the luncheon, she commended the House of Representatives for its bipartisan support of the order as it works to codify it into law.
Beyond broader enhancements to the foster care system, the EO specifically targets the critical transition into adulthood for youth aging out of the program. By fostering a collaborative network between federal agencies, private corporations, nonprofits, and educational institutions, the initiative aims to expand access to essential scholarships and career development opportunities.
Additionally, the order facilitates the creation of a dedicated online platform where foster youth can easily locate resources and draft personalized roadmaps for achieving long-term independence.
Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin have already begun to offer Fostering the Future university scholarship programs for young people leaving foster care.
She also mentioned that $30 million was allocated toward the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s budget for American foster youth housing.
“When passed, this will mark the second piece of legislation I have championed for the protection of America’s next generation,” Trump stated.
The first lady also championed the TAKE IT DOWN Act, a landmark piece of legislation that criminalizes the non-consensual online distribution of intimate images, including those created by artificial intelligence (AI).
Highlighting the tangible impact of these protections, Trump noted that the DOJ secured its first conviction under the new statute on April 7th. Building on this momentum, she shifted her focus to another cornerstone of her platform: the evolving role of AI and its multifaceted implications for the future of education.
“All 50 states are participating in the Presidential AI Challenge, and almost 3,000 schools nationwide joined the White House AI Workshop,” Trump said. “Our educators, students, and academic administrators understand the importance of mastering new technology.”
She also later addressed the United Nations (UN) Security Council about “the importance of peace through education,” saying, “We are not here to prepare our children for yesterday’s world. Be purposeful with your objectives and remember that AI accelerates everything.”
Last month, her Fostering the Future and AI efforts intersected at the Fostering the Future Together Global Coalition Summit, in which she hosted leaders from nearly 50 countries at the White House for two days — working toward expanding access to education and technology around the world.
“Never before has an American First Lady welcomed so many leaders to the White House for diplomatic purposes in one day,” Trump said, receiving a round of applause. “I am proud that America’s best technology companies, including Meta, Palantir, OpenAI, Adobe, Zoom Communications, X, and Microsoft, had the chance to advance our mission: to empower children with technology and education.”
Additionally, Melania spoke about the groups of children she and her representative helped to reunify with their families after being separated by the war in Ukraine.
“I completed the fourth reunification of Ukrainian and Russian children with their families. As you can imagine, this is no easy feat, but I applaud leadership from both nations in working with my representative and me to bring love and safety back to each individual who has been displaced as a result of this horrible war,” she said.
In August, Trump urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider the children of Russia and Ukraine in a letter. Since October, through collaboration with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the first lady has returned nearly 30 children to their families.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as First Lady, but understand that my persistence alone is not enough. Together, we can change people’s lives for the better,” she concluded on Thursday.
