Ehime cop claimed sojourn to hotel with underage girl was ‘sting operation’

EHIME (TR) – Sources with the Ehime Prefectural Police have revealed that a male inspector in his 40s met an underage girl through a dating app only to later falsely reveal that their illicit encounter was part of an investigation, reports the Yomiuri Shimbun (July 30).
In May, the inspector, who belongs to the Ehime Prefectural Police’s Organized Crime Control Division, met the girl at a hotel after she expressed on a social media app that she was interest in a relationship based on papakatsu, or compensated dating.
After receiving cash from the inspector at the hotel, the girl paid the room fee and left, the sources said.
The inspector later obtained the girl’s phone number from the taxi company she used to arrive at the hotel. When he called her, he said, “This is the police. I want to talk to you about papakatsu.”
The inspector then obtained her home address and summoned her to a nearby convenience store. Upon meeting the second time, he explained, “That was a papakatsu sting operation.” He then made her return the cash she had given him, minus the hotel fee.
“Cover investigation costs”
According to the girl’s mother, who spoke to the Yomiuri Shimbun, the inspector showed her his police badge in front of the convenience store. He said, “When we met at the hotel, there were investigators outside. The money I gave you was to cover investigation costs, so please return it.”
Suspicious, the mother inquired with prefectural police. A representative then explained, “it was not an investigation.”
The mother continued, “My daughter is worried that her address is now known. I feel it is very suspicious that he used his position as a police officer to obtain personal information.”
According to sources involved in the investigation, police are considering taking disciplinary action against the inspector.
A representative from the Ehime Prefectural Police told NHK, “As this is an individual case, we will refrain from commenting.”
