Telefónica Exits Latin America Markets to Cut Debt

Telefónica, Spain’s telecom titan, launches a sweeping asset sale, targeting up to $2.81 billion, reports Diario Expansión. The company offloads operations in Argentina, Colombia, Peru, the UK, and Spain, aiming to shed unstable markets.
This move marks a pivotal shift as new CEO Marc Murtra, appointed in late 2024, steers the firm toward stability. The spotlight shines on Argentina, where Telefónica seeks $1.04 billion for its subsidiary, though analysts peg it at $780 million.
Improved economic conditions under President Javier Milei spark interest from giants like América Móvil and Liberty Global. Meanwhile, Colombia’s $400 million sale to Millicom, agreed in July 2024, awaits approval, strained by Claro’s 50% market grip.
In Peru, Telefónica injects $410 million into Movistar to manage debt, navigating a tax dispute exceeding $500 million. The UK sees a $2.08 billion fiber network deal with Virgin Media O2, partnering with GIP and Cppib, while Spain’s Fiberpass sale nets $1.873 billion.
These steps aim to cut Telefónica’s $26.9 billion debt and fund 5G growth. Since 2019, Telefónica refocuses on Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the UK, exiting riskier Latin American zones.
Telefónica’s Strategic Retreat
Political unrest, currency swings, and legal hurdles drive this retreat, yet rivals like América Móvil expand aggressively. The company’s past sales, including $1.6 billion in Central America, show a consistent pattern.
Murtra’s strategy prioritizes liquidity and infrastructure, balancing shareholder dividends—$900 million from Brazil in 2024—with competitive pressures from BT and Orange.
However, risks loom as regulatory delays and market exits could cede ground to competitors. Still, the funds promise a leaner, more focused Telefónica. This overhaul reveals a telecom giant at a crossroads, shedding baggage to chase stability.
The figures tell a story of calculated withdrawal, but the real tale lies in Telefónica’s gamble to redefine its future amid a shifting global landscape.
